Bisi bele bath

One-pot meal is my all time favorite. Cooking food using only one utensil and that too when the 'sapaadu' turns out to be nutritious and tasty, the satisfactory level is amazing! Today, I made the famous Kannada recipe - bisi bele bath - a complete cuisine made with rice, lentils, lots of veggies, special pudi, ghee and what else you need! Come on, let's see the recipe!

Ingredients:
Rice - 3/4 cup
Tur dal - 1/4 cup
Vegetables of your choice - 2 cups (I have added carrot, beans, capsicum, potato and shallots)
Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
Bisi bele bath powder - 2 tbsp
Grated coconut - 1/4 cup
Tamarind - a small lemon sized
Salt - as required
Water - 2.5 cups
Ghee - 1 tsp
Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
Hing - 1 pinch
Curry leaves - few

Preparation:
  • Chop the veggies.
  • Soak tur dal in water for 20 minutes.
  • Soak tamarind in hot water for 10 minutes.
  • In a mixie, grind coconut and soaked tamarind along with bisi bele bath pudi to a fine paste.

Method:
Add the ground paste in a pressure cooker. Let it come to boil. Now add soaked tur dal, chopped vegetables, rice, turmeric powder and required salt. Add water and mix well. Close the cooker with lid and cook for 2 whistles.

Heat ghee in a tadka pan; add mustard seeds, hing and curry leaves. When they splutter, add to the bisi bele bath and mix well. Bisi-bisi-bele bath is ready to serve!

Note:
  • If required you can add more ghee and mix.
  • Drumstick, turnip, green peas, etc. add great taste to bisi bele bath. Try to include them in your recipe.
  • Serve hot with papad and raita.
