Broken Wheat Pulao | Dalia Pulao | கோதுமை ரவை புலாவ்

Godhumai ravai upma is one of my favorites. My mom prepares it for dinner and she uses coconut oil for seasoning that gives rich taste to upma. Today, I wanted to try the usual pulao recipe with dalia (godhumai ravai). To my surprise, the outcome was awesome and tasted the same as the usual veg pulao. I am really eager to share this recipe with you all. Though many of us do not like dalia, I suggest everyone to take it atleast once in a week, as dalia is rich in fiber. Now, let's see the preparation.
Preparation time : 10 minutes
Cooking time : 10 minutes
Serves - 1

Ingredients:
Broken wheat/ Dalia - 3/4 cup
Water - 1 3/4 cups
Salt - as required

Vegetables required:
Onion - 1 finely chopped
Tomato - 1
Green chilli - 1
Beans - 5
Carrot - 1
Potato - 1
Ginger - 1/2 inch
Garlic - 3 cloves
Mint leaves - few
Coriander leaves - few
Lemon juice - 1/4 tsp

Spice Powder:
Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
Red chilli powder - 1/2 tsp
Coriander powder - 1/2 tsp
Biryani Masala powder - 1/2 tsp

For seasoning:
Ghee - 1 tsp
Cinnamon stick - 1 small piece
Cloves - 1
Fennel seeds - 1/2 tsp

Method:

Finely chop onion, tomato, ginger, garlic, beans, carrot, potato; slit green chilli vertically; also finely chop mint leaves and coriander leaves.
Heat ghee in a cooker, add a bay leaf, cinnamon stick, 1 clove and 1/2 tsp fennel seeds. Saute them for few seconds and add onions.

Now add tomatoes, saute them for sometime and then add turmeric powder, red chilli powder, coriander powder and biryani masala powder.
Add all the vegetables, required salt and mix well.
Now add dalia, water, mint leaves and coriander leaves. Squeeze a dash of lemon.
Mix well and bring it to boil. Now close the cooker with lid. Do not put the cooker whistle, instead you can cover with a small khatori to prevent steam from escaping.
Cook on low flame for about 5 minutes. Ensure all the water has evaporated. Yummy, colourful broken wheat pulao is ready to serve. Cucumber raita would be the ultimate combination for this pulao.
Note:
  • This is the simplest version and takes very less time to cook.
  • To make this even more special and delicious, you can roast cashew nuts in ghee and add to the pulao.
  • Ingredients I used here are very less in quantity since I made this for only one person.
