Khaane ki Leela... RamLeela...

No. Nope! This is not a post by saffron chaddiwallas...Just that during Ramleela, Old Delhi turns into a foodopia with never ending treats and dishes some of which are available only during Ramleela.

Ok, so without much ado lets get started.

Travel tip:
During Ramleela, Old Delhi will be chock-a-bloc, hence use Delhi Metro to reach Chawri Bazaar Metro Station. The moment you disembark the metro station, nothing will prepare you for the sight that will assail you. You will be greeted with millions of shoppers, billions of food carts, and zillions of stores, some dating back to Shahjahan! (Yes, there is a notary who prepares documents in Urdu with a typewriter...!)

Ok, so down to the basics! Immediately after exiting the station, you will see Ashok Chat Corner. Have your dose of golgappas and the green chutney waala water.

Then head towards the left...just three stalls away is a joint which serves besan cheela, pav bhaji, aloo chaat and aloo tikki. The specialty is these tikkis are without dahi (curd) and are served with a divine red chutney!
Pav  Bhaji thayyar hai!
Aah!!! the ecstacy of golden tikkis
first of the lot - Aloo Tikki without dahi! Mind it!!!

The cheela - is pure bliss, shallow fried in Desi Ghee; it will give you a sense of satisfaction.

Change track now, and head in the street exactly opp the Metro exit. Here you will find a loooong alley filled with vendors selling food. The first few stalls sell delicious soya kababs and roomali rotis. Past them is the vendor selling kulle ki chaat - a fruit chat served with almost all fruits and spices. The preparation itself will mesmerize you.

And now, to the two best kept secrets in Old Delhi - Roller Kulfi and Daulat Ki Chaat.

Roller Kulfi is essentially a huge cylinder of kulfi rotating on skewers. The kulfi is then sprayed with various favored juices and is then scraped and served in a cup. The explosion of various flavors in your mouth is unbeatable. If that ain't sweet, nothing is!
Daulat ki chaat - this speciality of Old Delhi is available only between October and March. Prepared painstakingly at 5 in the morning, this milk based dish is served with dry fruits, khoa, and saffron. The taste of milk will remain with you long after you quit Old Delhi and will make you yearn to come back every October...
