My hubby and I are street food enthusiasts. Be it Lutyen's Delhi or humble Tilak Nagar, we care to find out the local delicacies. Stay tuned and subscribe to this blog to know where to eat kachoris while sipping Netaji's chai in Connaught Place.
To get started with, Tilak Nagar is a damn good place to visit in Delhi - in order to marvel at the idea that is India - a colony composed of Sikh refugees - it is a microcosm of any town in Punjab.
As soon as you deboard the Metro, Your first stop should be Papa Chinese. Yes, this oddly named joint serves Kurkure Momos. Tandoori momos are so passe' in front of Kurkure momos. Take your standard momos, jazz them by adding a mixture of maida and corn to make then KFCeseque. Top it up with a plate of honey chilli potato and you are midway between India and China!
Cross the road and visit Manmohan Bakery - unlike the namesake former Prime Minister, this place will surprise you with its collection of cakes, breads, and the ever humble aloo-tikki. Do try all the pastries here. Their cakes speak, really! 😜
Post Manmohan, head towards the Durga Mandir (a multi-storied temple). En route, you will find a vendor selling Gol gappas with the water flavored in 5 flavors - all the five types stored in earthen pots!!!
After gol gappas - on the right will be a stall selling spring rolls. Again, these rolls are not your standard, run of the mill cabbage stuffing types. This is West Delhi - these rolls are stuffed with noodles! - and to desi-fy it further, the elderly Sikh gentleman running this stall serves green chutney along with the rolls..
Do remember to thank the owner for the rolls and million light smile which the old man will flash will stay with you forever....! 😂
After the rolls, while heading back to the metro station, do stop at a friendly Sardarji vendor selling coconut water chilled and jazzed up with ice. All the Mallus and Tallus will be horrifed, but let me assure you, as a tru-blue Tallu, I loved it...!
Here is the epilogue - yummy mango shake. Mango shake served with vanilla ice cream, topped with aam papad slices (sweeter one), cherry and some drizzles of rooh afza! Wah...!😋😋😋😋😋 Do visit Tilak Nagar and please share your experience!
