Onion Chutney | வெங்காய சட்னி

Onion chutney is a great complement to idlis and dosas. This chutney tastes great when made with shallots. Yet, you can use big onions also. I used both shallots and big onions to make this chutney. Let's see the recipe.
Ingredients:

Shallots - a handful peeled
Big onion - 1 roughly chopped
Tamarind - a small piece
Red chillies - 4
Salt - as required
Water - 2 tbsp

For seasoning:

Oil - 1 tbsp
Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
Urad dal - 1/2 tsp
Curry leaves - 4

Method:

Heat 1 tsp oil in kadai, add red chillies, onions and tamarind. Saute until onion becomes transparent. Allow them to cool and grind them to a smooth paste in mixie by adding required salt and water.
In the same kadai, heat oil, add mustard seeds, urad dal and curry leaves. When they splutter, add the chutney to the kadai.
Mix well and switch off the flame after 1 minute. Onion chutney is ready!
